The Story Behind Tula
My family has a history of skin cancer, so finding reliable sun protection was a personal mission. I needed a hat that would provide natural shade and comfort while helping prevent sun damage. I knew other gardeners, sun lovers, and anyone that spends time outdoors would appreciate that same level of sun protection.
After exploring options with commercial hat factories in Mexico, we were introduced to a village with a rich tradition of handweaving palm straw hats. The artisans there have been crafting durable, breathable palm hats for over 400 years.
It’s been an honor to work alongside this incredible community. Over time, we’ve built a close relationship based on trust, collaboration, and a shared commitment to creating high-quality, fair trade straw hats that offer serious UPF 50+ sun protection.

Tula hats are made of a tightly hand-woven palm and are sewn with lock stitches, giving you a quality product that is a cut above mass-produced hats. Variations in color or weave are natural and not considered a flaw. Each hat is unique and brim sizes will vary.
Palm is pliable and can be packed in a suitcase with articles of clothing stuffed in and around the crown of the hat.
All designs are Tula originals, created and produced in a tradional manner started nearly four centuries ago in Mexico.
Palm is a sustainable fiber that is harvested locally twice a year in the traditional manner of the western coast of Mexico.
Providing excellent sun protection is the cornerstone of Tula. Our hats were tested by the California Polytechnic State University Textile Laboratory and were given the UPF 50+ Rating - the highest available. The University noted that "The brim area of these hats is excellent, in fact we have never tested anything with 0% transmittance. Congratulations on this protection!"
Long-term relationships are at the heart of Fair Trade. We work closely with the artisans to ensure fair wages, safe working conditions, environmental responsibility, and economic growth.
